Looking to forget recent heartbreaking losses and get Moore League play started right, the Wilson football team defeated Cabrillo 51-0 in the Bruins first home game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
With Cabrillo’s defense containing senior running back Ian Issa and the Bruins’ run game, quarterback Dylan Herrera connected on 5 of his 9 passes for 98 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the first half.
“We need to finish the Moore League,” Ziegenhagen said. “We want to make it back to the playoffs. We still made some mistakes but we played hard. Offensively we didn’t run the ball as well as we wanted to, (Cabrillo) has some big dudes up front, our offensive line just needs to get a little more push.”
Issa had 9 carries for 10 yards and two touchdowns, while Herrera led the team rushing with 45 yards on 9 carries.
Cabrillo’s (0-4) offense struggled offensively turning the ball over five times on fumbles with Wilson (2-3) recovering them each time. The Bruins also recovered one fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter.
In the second half, things got chippy in the third quarter with Wilson leading 38-0.
As Wilson was driving, the Bruins had a player ejected, while Cabrillo had two.
Both teams will be without those players next week due to the ejections.
Wilson faces Poly, while Cabrillo is on a bye.
