Continuing its hot start to the season, the St. Anthony boys’ basketball team rolled to a 70-45 victory over St. Paul Wednesday night at Errion Gym.

Playing in their first home game of the season, the Saints (12-2) also welcomed Miles Dickerson, Gorden Boykins and Bradley Ezewiro — three transfers that were eligible to play after sitting out the CIF required period.

St. Anthony jumped out to a fast 8-0 lead, but the new-look Saints’ lack of playing time together showed as St. Paul went on an 11-2 run to take a 11-10 lead with less than a minute left.

Senior CaCoa Chatman put the St. Anthony up 12-11 after the first quarter when he scored with time winding down.

“It’s our first game with all of our guys, so I’m trying to figure it out and they’re trying to figure it out,” St. Anthony coach Allen Caveness said. “Fortunately, we were able to figure it out and win this game.”

After leading 25-22 at halftime, St. Anthony turned up the pressure in the second half to take control of the game.

The Saints opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 33-24 lead and seemingly take control of the game.

Juniors Joshua Belvin and Frank Staine led the way for the Saints as they each scored nine points in the second half. Belvin was the leading scorer for St. Anthony with 14. Chatman was second on the team with 11 points.

The Saints will be back in action Friday when they host Millikan at 7 p.m.
