Behind the arm of sophomore quarterback Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell, Millikan defeated Cabrillo 35-7 in a Moore League on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Campbell-Caldwell completed 12 of 22 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
A stifling run defense by Cabrillo (1-6, 1-3) forced Millikan (6-2, 3-1) to throw the ball more than expected.
After punting on their opening drive, the Rams took a 7-0 lead when Campbell-Caldwell connected with junior Malik Bradford for a 37-yard touchdown with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter.
“In the beginning, we couldn’t get our run game going,” Bradford said. “We had confusion on offense, so we just had to start passing the ball to open up our run game.”
Millikan’s Qu’juan Campbell was held to 13 carries for 34 yards on the night.
But with the passing game working, Millikan opened up a 14-0 lead when Ausgustine Lopez broke off a 28-yard touchdown run with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
The Jaguars’ lone touchdown came when Foupusa Kaowili picked off Campbell-Caldwell in the second quarter to cut Millikan’s lead to 14-7.
Campbell-Caldwell showed off the Rams’ big-ability when he connected with Christian Bravo for a 78-yard touchdown to give Millikan a 21-7 lead in the second quarter.
