The Lancers (6-6, 1-1) have had a roller coaster campaign under third-year coach Duane Cooper. Lakewood capped an early three-game winning streak with a dramatic 59-58 win over Los Alamitos at the North OC Championships at Servite High. However, the Lancers were humbled a day later in an 80-62 loss to Canyon. They even started league play with a tough loss to Wilson, but bounced back with an exciting 70-68 win over Cabrillo.
Lakewood hasn’t won the league title since 2005, and the Lancers know it will take more than just skill to get back to the top of the standings. There are only five seniors on the roster, but they all know that a better bond off of the court goes a long way on the court.
“The team chemistry is a lot better than last year,” senior Daniel Wright said. “We have to use that to play with more passion. Especially on defense.”
Sophomore guard Atin Wright said it will also be important to keep the moral of his team up during this inconsistent season.
“We need to play with tons of energy,” Atin said. “We’re at our best when we’re scoring different ways. One of those ways is turning our defense into offense.”
