AOTW 8

Welcome back to Gazettes Sports Athletes of the Week presented by Naples Rib Company.

HIGH SCHOOL

Mike Mauai, LB Poly Football

Poly’s offense has been more about the aerial assault than the ground attack this year, but senior running back Mike Mauai got it going big time against Cabrillo last week. Mauai had 18 carries for 167 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-0 victory over the Jaguars.

Jake Zuanich, Wilson Water Polo

Wilson had a dominant win against Millikan last week to remain unbeaten in Moore League play, and Zuanich was a big part of it. First, he rang the team bell before the game to honor longtime coach Latham Bell, who passed away last spring. Then he scored six goals and notched three assists and two steals in a 13-2 win.

Jason Skinner, Millikan Football

The Millikan defense had its biggest performance of the year on Friday, shutting down Compton’s vaunted double-wing attack in a 33-13 win. The point of attack was Jason Skinner, as the lineman had 12 tackles, three sacks, a blocked punt, and a fumble recovery. They held Compton to their lowest rushing total and point total of the year.

COLLEGE

Natalia Munoz, Long Beach State Tennis

A great sophomore season continued for Long Beach State’s Natalia Munoz. At the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament, Munoz and partner Lena Pacholski won the doubles title with a 6-1 win over Fullerton’s top duo. It’s the second championship of the year for Munoz, who also won the singles title at the UNLV Invitational two weeks ago.
