This week's Athletes of the Week, brought to you by Naples Rib Company.

HIGH SCHOOL

Ritchie Ruiz, Cabrillo Soccer

It was a perfect start for the Jaguars last week, who went 4-0 while outscoring opponents 26-2. Cabrillo followed a 3-2 win over West Torrance with a 5-0 win over Avalon, a 9-0 victory over Inglewood, and a 9-0 victory over Rancho Dominguez. Ritchie Ruiz had seven goals and four assists on the week.

Darryl Polk, Long Beach Poly Basketball

The eight-time defending Moore League champion Jackrabbits started 3-1 last week with wins over Hart, Culver City, and Santa Monica. Poly’s only loss was to state-ranked Westchester. Senior Darryl Polk averaged 17 points per game for Poly, along with five assists per game.

COLLEGE

Shanaijah Davison, Long Beach State Basketball

Long Beach State went 1-3 last week but did get their first win of the season, over Pac-12 opponent Arizona. The 49ers were led by their dynamic freshman Shanaijah Davison, who averaged a team-high 14 points and 3.5 rebounds per game over the 49ers’ four contests.

Jordan Griffin, Long Beach State Basketball

It was a strange week for the 49ers, who started off with a 35-point loss at Arizona and a 36-point loss at home to Fresno State, then followed that with the program’s first-ever win over Stanford. The sophomore Griffin got his first start against the Cardinal and didn’t waste it, scoring 21 points including 11 straight down the stretch.
