Welcome back to Gazettes Sports' Athletes of the Week, presented by Naples Rib Company.

Ryan Pettway, Wilson Football

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Pettway was a hero for the Bruins last week as he led Wilson to a homecoming win over Lakewood in overtime. Pettway looks like a future star for the Bruins going 18 for 26 for 340 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The Bruins defeated the Lancers 31-28 in overtime.

Will Frankenfeld, Poly Cross Country

Two days, two races, two team wins for the Long Beach Poly boys cross country team. Will Frankenfeld won the Signal Hill Moore League meet on Wednesday for Poly, and then finished third overall to lead a team win at the state meet course on Friday at the Rough Rider Invitational. Frankenfeld ran 16:38 Wednesday and 15:36 on Friday. Poly is No. 6 in the state.

Anna Becker, Millikan Volleyball

Millikan girls volleyball had been stuck in fourth place for a decade, losing to Lakewood, Poly, and Wilson every time and beating Cabrillo, Jordan, and Compton every time. This year the Rams broke through in large part thanks to Anna Becker, who’s been a quality setter and hitter. She led the Rams to their second win of the year over Wilson last week with 11 kills and three aces, and time at setter as well.

Grant Lowary, LBCC Football

After a 2-2 start to the season, the Vikings needed a good game Saturday to start off conference play with a win against powerhouse rival Mt. SAC. Quarterback Grant Lowary delivered, going 28 for 53 for 262 yards and two touchdowns, with no turnovers. The Vikings won the game on a 9-play, 75-yard drive late in the fourth quarter.
