Goodwill Donates 50k Children’s Books to Long Beach Schools

Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (SOLAC) donated more than 50,000 children’s books to 16 Long Beach schools in October. The gently used books were originally donated at Goodwill SOLAC donation centers. The total value of the books is estimated at $100,000.

“Books are so powerful for children. So it’s crucial to expose them to a world of imagination, showing them that nothing is impossible in this world,” said Goodwill SOLAC President and CEO Janet McCarthy, who also noted that her brother’s recently published book reminded her how as a child she developed her love of culture and travel. “These books represent a wide range of children’s literature and reading levels – from preschool-age to primary school-age levels. We’re pleased to donate these books to the Long Beach Unified School District, which has been a terrific educational partner to our organization.”

“Thank you to Goodwill SOLAC for this generous donation of books, which will help support literacy efforts for thousands of students,” said Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Christopher J. Steinhauser. “We have long appreciated our partnership with Goodwill SOLAC, and this donation is another prime example of Goodwill’s exemplary support of our students and schools.”

The schools that received the books are: Addams Elementary, Bancroft/Rogers Middle Schools, Chavez Elementary, Grant Elementary, Holmes Elementary, Hudson K-8 School, Hughes Middle School, Jefferson Leadership Academies, Longfellow Elementary, Muir K-8 School, Powell K-8 School, Robinson K-8 School, Roosevelt Elementary, Stevenson Elementary, Washington Middle School, and Willard Elementary.
