David Gordon Berg, a lifelong Long Beach resident, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, at the age of 79, with his family surrounding him.
Born and raised in Bixby Knolls, Berg, the middle child of Lyman and Evelyn Berg, graduated from Long Beach Poly High School, Class of 1956. Keeping his eye on the family business of mobile communication, upon earning his BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California (1960), he helped lead the company into the cellular era.
Berg had three loves in his life: first and foremost, his wife, Kay Steltenkamp Berg, whom he met his senior year in high school on a Poly-Wilson High School ski trip, and unconditionally loved until the end. Married 57 years, together they made a home in Naples — since 1961 — where they raised their daughter, Julie Kay (Berg) Satariano, and son, Eric Berg.
A love of the sea and sailing led Berg to join the Long Beach Yacht Club in 1963, where he remained an active member in all aspects of the club’s activities. He was a successful yachting competitor in his Cal 3-30 sailboat, Mistress, and later in life, transitioned from sail to power with long-time boat partner, Dick Watkins, skippering their Bayliner 38, Heritage. His passion for yachting allowed him a lifetime of volunteer service, as Chairman of the prestigious Congressional Cup (1982), President of the Long Beach Sailing Foundation, LBYC Commodore (1986) and Board of Governors.
Always the USC Trojan, Berg was Cardinal and Gold tried-and-true, from his first day of freshman year through to his final days. He represented his Trojan crew here in Long Beach as Trojan Club President, initiating the first double-decker bus transportation up to the Rose Bowl to watch his beloved football team play. A lifelong alumni member of Cardinal and Gold and USC Associates, Berg also supported both his children to their USC graduations.
Berg served in the Air National Guard for more than 10 years and was an active Kiwanis International member. He will be remembered as the consummate volunteer, a leader in the sailing community, a dedicated father and a loving husband.
David Berg is survived by his wife, Kay, his daughter, Julie Kay and husband, John Satariano; his son, Eric and wife, Christie Berg; and his four grandchildren: Jack and Max Berg, Téa and Gianna Satariano.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Long Beach Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.
