A 27-year-old man killed when his car collided with another car on a street in Long Beach was publicly identified today.

He was Wilbur Loza of Los Angeles, coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz said.

The collision occurred about 10 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Atlantic Place, according to Long Beach police. Loza was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze south on Atlantic Place, police said. He apparently failed to make a turn at the end of the road and drove over a raised median and into the northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue, police said.

The Cruze then slammed into a 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by a 24-year-old Compton man with a 20-year-old woman passenger. Both vehicles sustained major front end damage, indicating a head-on collision, police said. Loza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both people from the Toyota were hospitalized, police said, adding that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the accident was urged to call the LBPD at (562) 570-7355. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
