oroner’s officials took the body from the scene sometime around 10 a.m. Friday and city crews were cleaning up the street at about 11 a.m.
The two victims were hospitalized, with one in critical condition, police said.
Long Beach officers received a call of a shooting about 9:20 p.m. in the area of Market and Atlantic. Police, while en route, learned the suspect had opened fire in front of a restaurant in the 5400 block of Atlantic where he injured a man.
The suspect remained in the area and then shot a woman before the first officer arrived, police said. His motive for injuring the man and woman was unclear.
The first officer on scene found the suspect armed with a shotgun and shot at man.
As a second officer arrived, the suspect fired at least twice at that officer’s vehicle, police said. That officer then struck the suspect with the vehicle.
A shotgun was found near the suspect.
As is procedure in officer-involved shootings, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Long Beach police will also review the incident to make sure officers complied with the department’s policies and procedures.
This was the second Long Beach police shooting in four days. On Sunday, Feb. 16, an officer shot and killed 33-year-old Kerry Michael Bounsom after police said he fired at an officer. Officers had deployed a Taser before that shooting, police said.
