The Long Beach Bike Share program has returned in full force with all 82 bike racks in the city set up at capacity.
People are able to rent bikes through the Long Beach Bike Share application available for Apple and Android devices. Daily plans are available starting at $7 per hour, and monthly plans start at just $15.
This is the first time that all of the bikeshare bikes have been available to rent since the city’s Stay At Home order temporarily shut down the bikeshare and scooter programs last year to minimize the chance of COVID-19 infection.
Since then, Pedal Movement — the First Street-based company tasked with managing the program — has been in limbo regarding the bikeshare relaunch. Last August, the bike share suspension was lifted, but then temporarily suspended again in October after a COVID-19 surge was reported.
"When you build a bike share system, we had not factored in having a kill switch button, having to remove everything pretty much overnight," Aaron Rickel, Pedal Movement representative, said about the adjustment last year during the height of the pandemic.
Fast forward to today, the program has adopted the new sanitation requirements from the city. They call for all field staff to wear personal protective equipment while working on the bikes, as well as following all sanitization and disinfection protocols when handling. The company logs all sanitation efforts and provides the sanitation logs to Long Beach Public Works monthly, and that process is expected to continue as part of Pedal Movement’s processes indefinitely.
The Public Works Department is also in the process of developing an accessible reporting application to track each company’s sanitation performance that will encompass public health reports for all businesses in the city.
“Pedal Movement has done a great job with pivoting their processes to make sure that the Bike Share remains a safe option for residents,” Jennifer Carrey, community relations officer at the Public Works office, said. “We are incredibly happy to once again have the bike share program up and running safely.”
In addition to the Bike Share program, Pedal Movement also offers personal bike maintenance at its location, 233 E. First St.
