A pedestrian died from injuries suffered after he was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross a street against a red light in Long Beach on Friday, Jan. 31, authorities said.
Long Beach police received a call about 7:15 p.m. of a hit-and-run traffic collision on Redondo Avenue and Hill Street involving a pedestrian, police said.
Officers found a man in the roadway with major injuries. Long Beach paramedics rendered aid and took the man to a local hospital in critical condition, but he later died, police said.
The driver, a 49-year-old Long Beach man driving a pickup truck, originally fled the scene, but returned and cooperated with the investigation, police said. He was not believed to be driving under the influence or driving distracted at the time of the crash.
Police learned the driver was traveling southbound on Redondo Avenue and went through the intersection at Hill Street on a green light. The pedestrian was attempting to cross Redondo Avenue on Hill Street on a red light when he was hit by the truck, police said.
Further identifying information about the pedestrian was not immediately available.
