A Long Beach dog recently tested positive for heartworm disease. The dog had been on and off heartworm prevention medicine over the last couple of years. His last heartworm test was about two years ago and was negative at that time.

Veterinarians often hear from their clients that the flea medicine they use doesn't seem to work any more. Maybe the fleas have become resistant to the medicine, or a new type of super flea has evolved in our area, or this year’s weather is somehow making the flea problem worse than previous years.

The City of Long Beach Animal Shelter and spcaLA is looking for families to adopt three Rottweiler dogs. The dogs, Brutus, Rosalie, and Dutch, have been at the shelter since January 25.

The last several winters have been pretty dry here in Southern California, and it appears that Mother Nature decided to let us have all that rain with compound interest this year. We’ve had some record downfalls and we are told there is more to come.

Fats and fatty acids, such as Omega 3 and Omega 6, are becoming common nutritional supplements to pet diets. Although most people give them to promote skin and coat health, they have been shown to provide energy, aid in fat-soluble vitamin absorption, modulate inflammation, are structural components of cell membranes as well as several other essential metabolic processes.

Fall is here and winter is approaching. While most of the country is getting ready to protect their pets from freezing cold and snow, we here in Southern California might have to wear shoes that cover our toes and maybe put a long sleeve shirt on. Long Beach, like many other cities, is becoming a vertical community. High rises and other tenant-dense living communities can pose special challenges for pet owners.

Accidents happen. Pets sometimes urinate inappropriately in the house. There are many reasons for this including behavioral issues, lack of training, urinary tract infections and sometimes bladder stones also known as cystic calculi.

Most people are aware that certain foods that are safe for humans may not be safe for our pets. Chocolate is a good example. Delicious for people but dogs are unable to metabolize an ingredient in chocolate that acts like a stimulant and can cause hyperactivity, seizures and death in dogs.

Sometimes our pets are afflicted with diseases that don’t seem to get better with medicine or conventional treatments. Or sometimes the medicine works but is not well tolerated in a particular patient.

People sometimes assume cats and dogs are the same. They both are four-legged furry mammals that have been domesticated for centuries.
