Wilson Girls Soccer

Wilson girls soccer bookended 90 scoreless minutes with phenomenal chances to take a lead on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. That left the door open for visiting Los Osos (16-6-3) to score the only goal of the game in the second overtime and knock off Wilson 1-0. Los Osos hosts JSerra in the second round.

“We had golden opportunities and couldn’t put them away,” Wilson coach Dalton Kaufman said. “One goal would’ve changed the entire game.”

Less than a minute after the opening whistle, Wilson senior Alma Hernandez’ pass across the 18-yard box found senior Andrea Torres alone with Los Osos goalkeeper Vianey Lopez. Torres’ shot hit the near post and ricochet across and out of the box.

In the final minute of the first overtime period, Wilson senior Harmony Ntuck controlled a long pass to the top of the box and laid off a nice ball to Saida Wiltz. The sophomore took two touches to get an angle at goal but her open shot went high over the crossbar.

In the first minute of the second overtime, Los Osos senior Serena Camacho dribbled to the corner and crossed it into the Wilson box for Erin Covey. The sophomore used her first touch to keep the ball at her feet, spun off of a defender, and buried it into the far side netting with her left foot.

“The girls are disappointed because we feel like we could’ve won it,” Kaufman said. “But they have a lot to be proud of after the way they played this season.

Wilson (13-7-2) won its first Moore League title since 2013 and its 11th in the last 15 years. Los Osos finished third place in Baseline League. Both teams reached Division 1 quarterfinals in 2015 and lost in the first round last year.

Los Osos was disjointed for the first half hour on the unforgiving natural playing surface at Wilson. The Grizzlies didn’t take a shot until the 27th minute on a set piece, but they outshot the Bruins 12-2 from that point until Covey’s golden goal.

CORONA SANTIAGO 2, MILLIKAN 1 >> The Rams (14-6-5) lost on the road in the first round of Division 1. Ariana Jorge scored a late goal for Millikan.

MOORPARK 4, LAKEWOOD 0 >> The Lancers (12-8-4) pushed hard for a goal and gave up a few late.
