Head coach Dan Monson and his staff have again succeeded in putting together an exciting and difficult schedule for the upcoming 2013-14 Long Beach State Men's Basketball season, as the 49ers will face 14 out-of-conference opponents before beginning their quest for a third consecutive Big West regular-season championship.
Long Beach State kicks off the season by hosting Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, November 9, and other home highlights include a matchup against USC on December 19, and playing Creighton on December 3, fresh off of the Bluejays move to the Big East. The 49ers will once again play Loyola Marymount, this time in the Walter Pyramid on November 14, and will host Montana State-Billings on Saturday, December 21.
Big road contests are part of the tradition for Long Beach State under Dan Monson, and the upcoming season is no exception. Following the Hawaii Pacific game, the 49ers will make their first road trip of the season, traveling to Arizona for a game on Monday, Nov. 11. Other road contests include games at Kansas State, at Washington, at North Carolina State, at Nevada and the final game of the non-conference season at Missouri on Saturday, January 4.
The 49ers have also accepted an invitation to the 8-team Puerto Rico Tip-Off, held from Nov. 21-24 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The participants in the field alongside Long Beach State are Michigan, Kansas State, Georgetown VCU, Northeastern, Charlotte, and Florida State. For the first time in tournament history, all eight teams reached either the NCAA Tournament or NIT, and all eight finished the 2012-13 season with winning records. All three teams will play three games in a tournament format, but times and matchups have yet to be announced.
Big West play will begin on January 9 for Long Beach State, when the 49ers host UC Irvine in the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers have captured the regular season championship in each of the last two seasons, and will try for their third along with a second NCAA Tournament appearance in that time over the course of the league season.
The Big West Tournament will be held from March 13-15 at the Honda Center, with the NCAA Tournament beginning on March 18.
Times for many games are yet to be determined, and all are subject to change.
