Three Long Beach State women's water polo players were recognized by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Tuesday, July 2, as Christina Kotsia, Melissa Matheson, and Chelsea Parks earned All-America Honorable Mention acclaim. The trio of award winners marked the first time that three 49ers have earned ACWPC All-America honors since 2003. The award was also the first time for all three players.
Kotsia proved to be a force for LBSU in the perimeter firing in 50 goals as a true freshman. Her 50-goal total was good for second on the team. The Athens, Greece native also showed she had poise converting 12-of-15 penalty shots on the season. Her 17-game scoring streak lasted over a one month span leading the 49ers to a 13-4 record during that stretch. She also led The Beach with 15 goals during conference play to help LBSU secure the fourth-seed in the Big West Tournament.
Matheson finished her career at Long Beach State with 117 goals to put her 10th all-time in career goals. The senior also racked up her second-consecutive Second-Team All-Big West honors this year as well. The Long Beach, Calif. product pounded the ball into the back of the net 36 times in set for the 49ers this past season and led the team in scoring six times.
Parks led all 49ers with a team-high and career-high 60 goals to put her seventh in the Big West Conference. The junior's breakout season garnered her First-Team All-Big West honors as well. The former Los Osos High School standout is currently ninth on the all-time career-goals leaderboard with 120 goals. Parks also posted a career-high of 17 multi-goal matches.
