We got a special treat on Thursday afternoon, as we were the first media to get a look at the new Walter Pyramid floor design at Long Beach State, as well as a tour of all four redesigned locker rooms.

We’d had concerns about the color of the floor print when we saw the initial design, but it looks fantastic in person. The design was chosen after a ten-month review process that involved all of the affected coaches, and the color is meant to be reflective of the California beach—it was stressed that they are not changing the school’s colors.

Different beach themed designs were considered, including one that would have included beach chairs and other items. We like the simplistic look—and that it was well-thought out enough to make sure that those are California palm trees, and not Hawaiian ones. The floor design was done by Pacific Sports Flooring, who’ve done a number of premier collegiate gym floors, including USC’s.

The locker rooms are actually probably a bigger deal. They’re a huge recruiting tool, as all four basketball and volleyball teams will now have their own lounge space, and their own kitchens, as well. Check out these photos, and CLICK HERE for our video walk through.
