cert training for teens

Teens participate in a disaster drill at last weekend’s CERT training at the Long Beach Fire Training Center.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Thursday, Sept. 28, that the Long Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was selected as the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Community Emergency Response Team Initiatives Award.

The award recognizes the efforts of LBFD to inform community members about safety and survival during the annual CERT expo, which takes place every September, aligning with FEMA's National Preparedness Month.

Demonstrations include life-saving tips that can assist community members in the event of an emergency.

“We are a stronger, more resilient nation when we work together — in communities large and small — to prepare for and respond to disasters,” Daniel Kaniewski, FEMA acting deputy administrator, said. “FEMA is proud to recognize the great efforts of individuals and organizations who are helping to create a national culture of preparedness.”
