Independence Day, July 4, falls on a Thursday this year, creating a mid-week day off for many people.
Most city offices will be closed, including City Hall, utility departments and Parks, Recreation and Marine administrative offices. Water and Energy Resource (natural gas) departments will have staff on hand to deal with emergency calls. Animal Care Services will be available, although the P.D. Pitchford Animal Village will be closed for the holiday.
City trash pickup will continue on its regular schedule, although some private haulers are taking the day off. No mail will be delivered, and banks will be closed, as will most businesses — with the exception of food outlets, including Starbucks.
There will not be street sweeping on Thursday, but streets will be swept on Friday. Parking meters that say "except for holidays" will not be enforced Thursday.
Long Beach’s Police and Fire departments will be out in full force Thursday and Thursday night, with emphasis on driving under the influence and illegal fireworks infractions. All fireworks are illegal for individual use in Long Beach.
