At about 5:25 a.m. today, Thursday, police were called to the intersection of Bayshore Avenue and Second Street on a report of a bicycle-car collision.

When they arrived, officers found an adult woman with injuries to her upper torso on the pavement. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the female bicyclist to a local hospital, where she was in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

Police information officer Shaunna Dandoy said the investigation showed that the bicyclist was riding north on Bayshore Avenue and entered the intersection with Second Street on a red light. A black Jeep going west on Second Street went into the intersection on a green light and struck the bicyclist.

The male driver of the Jeep remained on scene on cooperated with the investigation. It was raining when the collision occurred.

The bicyclist's name was not released. Police closed westbound Second Street from about 6 to 7:30 a.m. to conduct the investigation.
