A man suspected of driving while drunk is in jail today, accused of driving the wrong way on the 710 Freeway and killing one woman.

Long Beach police responded at 10 p.m. Friday to a report of an accident on the freeway between the Ninth Street on-ramp and the Sixth Street on-ramp, according to Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department. A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a white 1997 Chevy Tahoe entered the southbound 710 Freeway at the Broadway offramp, travelling northbound.

Pratt said the truck struck a 1987 Honda Accord and a 2010 Toyota Corolla, both traveling south on the freeway. The passenger in the Honda, Tricia Esmond Cade of Long Beach, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 26-year-old woman driving the Honda had to be extricated from the car by the Long Beach Fire Department before being transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Corolla a 26-year-old Long Beach man, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Tahoe got out of his truck and ran from the scene, but was detained until the police arrived. He was later identified as Derrick Armstrong, 33, of Buena Park.

Armstrong was arrested and booked for driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and hit and run causing death or injury, and is being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $100,000 bail.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Long Beach Police Accident Investigations Detective David Lauro at 570-7355.

The male in the 2010 Toyota Corolla is my brother in law. I am thankful to God he is alive today. My deepest condolences go out to the family of Tricia Esmond Cade. May she rest in peace, and may God give her family the strength during this hard and unbelievable moment. To the passenger, we hope you get well and know that God has a reason for everything. To the drunk driver and anyone else who drinks and drive: REALLY?? People don't get it, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!!! Due to your stupid decision two innocent people are hurt and one is dead. May God have mercy on you.

Pamela, Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers. Tricia Danielle Esmond-Cade, Dani as her family called her, was my niece. It goes without need to say, we are devastated. I am so extremely glad your brother-in-law will be all right. Heather, the driver in the hospital, is hanging in there, but I haven't heard much and my prayers go out to her and her family as well.

Please, PEOPLE, hug your children, call your extended family, you know, those aunts, uncles, cousins you haven't spoken to in a while. Live like there is no tomorrow, because sometimes, there isn't. 27 is just way too young to have a healthy, active, beautiful soul taken from this earth. I will miss her until it is my turn and I get to see her again.
