Police found the lifeless bodies of two people Thursday afternoon inside a Long Beach apartment during a welfare check, authorities said.

The two individuals were not immediately identified.

The landlord of an apartment complex in the 1300 block of East Appleton Street had called police to check on the occupants of the apartment unit at about 2:30 p.m., said Long Beach police Lt. Megan Zabel. Soon after arriving, officers entered the unit and found two people who were declared dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives and investigators with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office were called to investigate the deaths, Zabel said.

It was not immediately clear how long they had been dead or whether foul play had been suspected.
