A two vehicle collision in Long Beach left one man dead on Thursday, June 27, and eight other people hospitalized, including five minors.

The crash happened at about 10:10 a.m. on the 4300 block of Long Beach Boulevard, south of 44th street, Long Beach Police Department officials said in a news release.

Preliminary evidence suggested that a 2010 Dodge Challenger was traveling north when it collided with a 2015 Kia Rio that was pulling out of a residential driveway. Investigators believe the 90-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Rio failed to yield to oncoming traffic as she drove onto Long Beach Boulevard, said the release.

All nine occupants of both vehicles were hurt and taken to nearby hospitals, said the release. The 91-year old man who had been sitting in the Kia’s passenger seat later died of his injuries. He was identified as Los Alamitos resident Howard Schaack, police said.

Details regarding the condition of the eight other people involved in the collision were not immediately released. Five of those injured were minors who were sitting in the back seats of the Dodge and not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said.
