A motorist died Sunday after his car slammed into a traffic light post in Long Beach while he was fleeing the scene of a separate, non-injury hit-and-run collision, police said.
Officers responded to the crash near intersection of Second Street and Marina Drive at about 1:20 a.m., according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department. It said witnesses pulled a man from the wreckage of a red 2004 Toyota Camry that had burst into flames. He died shortly after being taken to a hospital.
Preliminary evidence suggests that the motorist was speeding away from the scene of a non-injury collision that happened near the intersection of Second Street and Granada Avenue in Belmont Shore. That crash occurred about 1.5 miles away from where the Camry struck the pole.
The man was not carrying ID at the time of the crash. Authorities did not immediately release further details.
