In an adult-style trick-or-treat, clues will be hidden at businesses along Broadway throughout October as part of the inaugural On Broadway Merchants Association Scavenger Hunt.

Those who pick up a game card at a participating business and complete that card — matching the facts on the game card with the correct corresponding business —between Oct. 1 and Halloween can win prizes (including cash and gift cards) worth up to $250.

The event is completely free of charge — no purchases are necessary to complete the game card at participating businesses. There are five levels of prize categories based on the number of stickers gathered and clues solved correctly. The more places you visit, the better prize you are eligible to win.

The On Broadway Merchant Association event is designed to educate consumers about the various businesses in the area. The event is produced by Everett Andrew Marketing and is modeled after the Belmont Shore and Naples Scavenger Hunt that has taken place for the past three years.

“We want to put Broadway on the map for more people with activities like this,” The Attic owner Steve Massis said. “The scavenger hunt is great exposure for our business (which just opened this year). You get to be personable with people and they learn something new about your business through the scavenger hunt clues. It is a fun way to get new customers in your doors to treat returning customers to a fun fact about your business.”

Massis said his restaurant’s clue involved a unique ingredient The Attic uses in its macaroni and cheese recipe.

Participating Broadway businesses include The Attic, Beachrunners’ Inn, Belmont Pets & Launder Pet, Bliss on Broadway, The Eclectic Attic, Envy Beauty Studio, Flaunt Salon, Hot Java, Iguana, Keir Jones State Farm, Long Beach Cotton, Paradise Piano Bar, Red Door Living, Sasha’s — Living with Style, Spa Sidney, Stephen Coates DDS, Vans Hardware and The Wine Crush.

The contest begins on Oct. 1 and ends at midnight on Oct. 31. Participants must be at least 18 years old and must be residents of California. Game cards need to be turned in to Keir Jones State Farm at 4105 E. Broadway before the deadline. Winners will be selected and notified on Nov. 1.
