• As one might expect, Poly had a lot of success in the recent Moore League track and field individual finals.

It starts with Joey Hughes, the senior who won the 200 meter, 400 meter, plus was part of the winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams. On the girls’ side, there was Erin Reid, who won the 100 meter and the long jump (she is now bound for Tennessee State next year).

Some of Poly’s top women runners were at the prestigious Penn Relays last weekend. In the 4 x 400 meter relay they finished fifth overall among high school teams, but the fastest of an American schools. In the 4 x 1,600 the Jackrabbits finished a respectable sixth.

• Long Beach City College’s two diamond teams are alive and well in the post season.

The Viking softball team advanced to the Super Regionals after freshman Christine Gonzalez earned her third consecutive win from the mound and helped out her own cause with a three-run double to lead LBCC to a 5-2 win over No. 13 Los Angeles Mission College in game two of the Southern California regional playoffs on Sunday at LBCC.

The Vikings swept the best-of-three series and advance to this week’s super regionals, where they will host No. 5 Saddleback.

The first game is Saturday at noon, part of a double-header. If game three is necessary, it is Sunday at noon.

• On the men’s side, LBCC enters the first round of the playoffs as the 14th seed facing Orange Coast College this weekend on the road.

The Vikings were 26-18 overall, but just 13-11 in conference play, good enough for fourth place and a spot in the post season. Orange Coast and Long Beach met at the start of the season, and OCC took two of three from Long Beach.

The winner of the round one series advances to a four-team super regional double-elimination tournament on May 16-18.

• Speaking of playoffs, last night was the final games of the Moore League baseball season, and next week the playoffs get underway.

Wilson is assured a spot, and likely a high seed, with its 23-5-1 record on the season. Lakewood, which won the Moore League, also is in.

Poly or Millikan will fill out the Moore League playoff roster, the two played last night with the playoffs on the line. The results were not available at press time.

• With a win last Saturday, the Belmont Shore Rugby team earned a week off before they have to start the playoffs. Which, when you’re talking rugby, is a nice break to have.

Belmont Shore jumped out to an 18-3 lead against San Diego powerhouse Old Mission Beach Athletic Club and held on to win 28-17.

That gave them a win in the Red Conference and a bye week, with their playoffs starting May 17.
