For A Good Cause usually deals with helping our own community. But we also want to include local opportunities to reach out and help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There still is plenty of need, and plenty of ways to help. A Web site publicizing local relief efforts is at www.longbeachcares.org. From 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday), the Advance Wellness Center will donate all fees collected to the Red Cross. Services offered include chiropractic, acupuncture and stress management. Whether the amount is a co-pay, deductible or the complete cost of service, the money will go to hurricane relief. In addition, a portion of massage fees will be donated as well. Appointments are required; call 795-6680 The Advanced Wellness Center is located at 6423 PCH in the Marketplace Long Beach. The Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting a Hurricane Katrina Relief Night in cooperation with the Long Beach Museum of Art. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the aquarium, 100 Aquarium Way, Theres no charge, but cash donations are requested. Additionally, all the money from food and beverage sales (full meals and snacks will be available) will be donated to hurricane relief. The Long Beach Museum of Art will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. There will be no admission charge, so all of the money donated will go to hurricane relief. Also on Friday, the band Barefoot Planet will perform from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Cirivellos Restaurant and Sports Bar, 4155 Viking Way. The band will match donations to the Red Cross up to $500 for the Red Crosss Katrina relief efforts. Belmont 2 the Bayou, a yard sale benefit extraordinaire will raise money for hurricane relief from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 208 St. Joseph St. A Taste of New Orleans, fundraiser for the Gay and Lesbian Center of Long Beach, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Seaside Ballroom at the Long Beach Convention Center, 300 E. Ocean Blvd. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Tickets are $65. Call 434-4455, ext. 229, or go to www.centerlb.org. Through the end of the month, Shannons Bayshore Irish-American Bar is donating $1 to hurricane relief for every Shoot-The-Root sold. Shannons is at 5335 E. Second St. Call 433-5901. Also through the end of the month, the Underground Salon will donate 20% of its retail sales to hurricane relief. They are located at 2172 Bellflower Blvd. Call 594-4035. La Parolacccia will donate its proceeds on Oct. 3 and 10 to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief. Long Beach Junior Chamber (the Jaycees) is hosting its ninth annual Bachelor Bid and Silent Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Club Cohiba, 110 E. Broadway. The bachelor auction begins about 9 p.m. The money raised goes to three local organizations and table sponsorship benefiting the victims of Hurricane Katrina are also available. The Southern California Blues Society will sponsor a Katrina Disaster Relief Benefit from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Blue Café on The Promenade. Groups performing including Aunt Kizzys Boyz, The Bernie Pearl Band, Daddy and the Usual Suspects, an all-star band and more. A minimum donation of $5 is requested. Fourth St. The 2000+ Bookstore is urging its customers to donate to hurricane relief. Portfolio Café raised nearly $1,000 thanks to contributions from customers and performing musicians.
