When the beloved EJ Malloy’s on Broadway closed in July, regulars were dismayed.

Fortunately, they didn’t have to worry. Two weeks later, on Aug. 15, following a frantic refurbishing, The Firkin Pub and Grill opened, retaining much of what was popular while updating things to the reflect some more contemporary tastes.

“We want to retain the warm comfortable feeling, like Cheers,” co-owner Mia Cornelius said. “We want people to meet old friends and make new friends.”

It’s still a classic Irish bar, but co-owners Bruno Rocha and Cornelius cleaned the place from top to bottom, taking everything off the walls. They kept their employees on salary to help with the work.

They gutted the patio, completely replaced the wood fencing making it cozy. They trimmed the ivy and and now part of that ivy even looks like a sculpture on one wall. The patio is a great size for private parties for about 60 people.  

“Make your reservations now for holiday parties,” Cornelius said.

Good news for sports fans: they even added some TVs.

By the way, a Firkin is a small cask or a unit of liquid volume of about 11 gallons.

About The Food

They freshened the menu, adding items to reflect changing customer tastes such as vegan.  Ninety-five percent of their items are made from scratch. One of the new dishes is Heartcakes, vegan crab cake with chickpea base and vegan tartar sauce.

“It’s one of our best sellers,” Cornelius said.  “It’s liked by all."

Another new item is Firkin Castle Sliders ($10) that’s a nod to Cornelius’s Midwest roots, home of the legendary White Castle restaurants. It’s three Angus beef sliders.

The Firkin Fries, which are steak fries ($8) with a choice of toppings, including a Spicy Adobo Vegan Notcheez sauce.

The Nashville Hot chicken ($13) is brined overnight, battered deep fried, and tossed with firkin sauce. 

The Fish and Chips remain a best seller. They’ve added Panko breadcrumbs, which provide an extra crunch.

“People are loving the change,” Cornelius said.

For brunch, try waffles, benedicts and Bottomless Mimosas.

For appetizers, its the Hummus Sampler with flavors including cilantro jalapeño, Lemon Whiskey Balsamic Glazed Brussels Sprout or fried pickles.

Desserts include A Guinness Chocolate donut, a Cream Brule Donut with Irish Cream Filling, a Guinness Chocolate Bundt cake and croissant donuts with coconut cream and peanut butter with chocolate.


It’s beer and wine right now. They completely overhauled the wine list, with an emphasis on family and estate wines. They concentrate on locally sourced beers for the 21 taps, two-thirds that rotate on regular basis.
