More than a dozen professional artists will take to the pavement next month in the Long Beach Towne Center to create temporary masterpieces using chalk.

Towne Center officials made the announcement Monday. Fifteen artists have tentatively confirmed they will go to work July 13 with hundreds of pieces of pastel chalk to create murals. The festival, from noon to 3 p.m., is free to attend.

In addition to watching the pros, there will be space for youngsters to explore their talent at the Children's Chalk Zone. Face painting, balloon twisting and more will be offered, as well.

Everything takes place on the Promenade in the courtyard near the entrance to the Edwards Long Beach Stadium 26. The Towne Center is on Carson Street next to the 605 Freeway.
