• Today (Thursday) the Vons on Ocean Boulevard reopens, but this is not your average Vons anymore. Officially, it is called “The Market... Vons” and is one of Vons’ new “lifestyle” stores. What that means is more organic and healthy products, plus some “niche” foods expected to be found in places such as a Whole Foods. There also will be more of a focus on customer service. The new Vons still will have the more traditional staples of pasta, hot dogs and the like, although the number of varieties may decrease. The new-look, remodeled store will be welcomed by the neighborhood, which has been pining for a high-quality market for years. The Vons is at 3900 E. Ocean Blvd. • There are a couple of new restaurants in the trendy area of Fourth Street. One is called Lola’s Mexican Cuisine. This is not your standard Mexican fare but rather authentic dishes with some flair — birra Guadalajara, two different types of mole, chile relleno casero and more. And don’t worry, there is a taco plate special on the menu, too. Lola’s is located at 2030 E. Fourth St., just a few doors east of Cherry Avenue. Give Lola a call at 343-5505. • If you feel like something with more of a Vietnamese flavor profile, then head on over to Number Nine. The new eatery offers a host of interesting noodle soups (pho) as well as some cold vermicelli rice noodles (bun). If you haven’t had Vietnamese noodle dishes, you should. These are made with organic meats (well, except for the vegetarian dishes) that add a little more flavor to the meals. There also are Vietnamese sandwiches, some great teas, interesting deserts (ginger-infused crème brulee) and they have cocktails as well. Number Nine is located at 2118 E. Fourth St. Call 434-2009 or log on to www.numberninenoodles.com. • Normally the switching out of taps at a bar is far from news — but when Joe Jost’s stops serving Pabst Blue Ribbon, it is news. Due to pricing problems with its distributor, the PBR taps that were so busy at Jost’s now pour Busch. Jost’s is Long Beach’s oldest bar and an icon in the city. Stop in at 2803 E. Anaheim St. or order your ubiquitous T-shirt at www.joejosts.com. |
