Residents of Long Beach help people all year through a variety of activities. Listed below are the results of some projects, as well as more opportunities to reach out to others.
The Taste of the Coast Event, held by Long Beach Kids Connection Aug. 2, raised $25,000 for Children Today and $5,000 for Long Beach Day Nursery. Their next event is a rummage sale on Oct. 25 to benefit New Life Beginnings and Children Today.
Save the Date Alert: Children’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has scheduled their annual fashion show and silent auction for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Hyatt Regency.
St. Joseph Elementary School is hosting two fundraising events on Friday, Oct. 2. The first is a golf tournament with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Tickets are $175 and include admission to second event, Oktoberfest, which starts at 6 p.m. on the school campus at 6200 E. Willow St. Oktoberfest is for adults ages 21 and older. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Call 682-9005. That’s the number for golfing tickets as well.
“Dressed in Black,” a cabaret performance of duets and comedy will raise money for Friends of Long Beach Animals at two performance in October at Bay Shore Community Church. An all-day fundraiser — “A Day in Paradise 2”— for the AIDS Food Store of Long Beach gets started with a pancake breakfast at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Paradise Piano Bar and Restaurant at 1800 Broadway. They’ll also donate 20% of their proceeds during the day. Reservations are required for the dinner. Call 590-8773.
The H’ARTbeats in Harmony music festival, featuring Suzi Sarinsky and the Tony Rich Project, runs from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Immanuel Center for Conscious Living, 3215 E. Third St. The event raises money for H’artworks, which provides arts and community development programs for Horace Mann Elementary School and the Bluff Heights neighborhood. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and students and $10 for children and are available online at http://heartbeatsinharmony.eventbrite.com.
The “Fall Festival of Grace” to benefit Christian Outreach Appeal, begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at First Baptist Church of Lakewood, 5336 E. Arbor Rd. Christian Outreach feeds more than 300 people daily, distributes groceries to homeless and maintains men’s and women’s transition housing. Tickets are $60 and that includes a banquet and live and silent auctions. Call 432-1440.
The Long Beach AIDS Foundation will host its post-AIDS Walk gala, the Red Ribbon Affair, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the Expo Building, 4321 Atlantic Ave. In addition to awards and a gourmet dinner, there will be casino action from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $95. Operation Jump Start is the beneficiary of the money raised at “Fall Fashion Show 09” from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Long Beach Playhouse, 5021 E. Anaheim St. In addition to the fashion show, there will a silent auction and a live auction featuring items including autographed guitars from the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. La Strada restaurant is hosting a kick-off party for its “2010 Pinup Girls of La Strada” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. The waitresses all dressed as ‘40s style pinups for photos in the calendar and a portion of the money raised from selling the calendars goes to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. La Strada is at 4716 E. Second St.
“A Night at the Monte Carlo Casino,” to raise funds for Haven’s Heart, runs from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 9, at the Petroleum Club, 3636 Linden Ave. In addition to the casino games, there will be a race car photo opportunity and live and silent auction. Haven’s Heart provides support to families struggling to care for chronically ill children at home. Tickets are $50. Call 426-7500, ext. 304.
“Eco-Couture at the aquarium” to raise money for Goodwill runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Aquarium of the Pacific, 100 Aquarium Way. The event is a partnership with California Sate University Long Beach, College of Continuing Education and the aquarium. It will take place in the aquarium’s Great Hall. Tickets are $85. Food Finders will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a gala including dinner, live and silent auctions and dancing at 6 p.m. Oct. 9, at The Grand, 4101 E. Willow St. Tickets are $80, or $750 for a table of ten. Call 598-3003.

Between now and Nov. 7, the Ralphs Grocery Company will be collecting money to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliates in Southern California. The Komen organizations raise money to help in the fight against breast cancer. Customers can drop off spare change in canisters at the checkstands while shopping at Ralphs.
Aegean Designing Whims, a home decorating shop, is offering a unique fund-raising opportunity to nonprofit organizations. The group invites 25-35 people, decides what they want to charge and then keeps the money. Designing Whims provides entertainment, like a chef, for example, and opens their shop for the event. To schedule an event, call 430-2969.
