Residents of Long Beach help people all year through a variety of activities. Listed below are the results of some projects, as well as more opportunities to reach out to others.
The first Stand Up and Fight Cancer Cut-A-Thon at the D’aversa Salons in Long Beach raised $2,645.20 on Oct. 19. The money is being donated to Long Beach Memorial Medical Foundation and the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center.
The Long Beach Auxiliary of the Los Angeles Philharmonic will host a benefit for the Youth Music Education Programs of the Philharmonic today (Thursday, Oct. 30) at The Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. There will be lunch followed by the opportunity to play bridge, bunco or other games as well as door prizes and gift baskets. Members of the Long Beach Auxiliary live in Long Beach, Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach and Cypress. For tickets, call 434-9869 or 594-5519.
A 12:30 p.m. shotgun start kicks off the Long Beach Day Nursery golf open today (Thursday, Oct. 30), at the Navy Golf Course in Cypress. The entry fee of $225 includes driving range and putting practice, box lunch on the course and reception including heavy hors d’oeuvres and prizes. The Navy course is at 5660 Orangewood in Cypress. Everyone donating blood at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center before the end of the month (which is tomorrow, Friday), will receive a free espresso or gourmet treat. All the blood donated is used at the medical center or at Miller Children’s Hospital. To make an appointment, call 933-0808.
Volunteer Action for Aging is looking for donations and volunteers to help deliver Thanksgiving dinners to older and disabled adults. In the past they have delivered 300 meals to Long Beach and surrounding communities. The deadline for participating is Oct. 31. Call 637-7103.
Depression-era glass will be auctioned off by Fostoria Glass Collectors, Inc., beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Petroleum Club, 3636 Linden Ave. Forstoria Glass is a nonprofit that supports museums and dissemination of information about American handmade glassware. Assisteens of Long Beach will host a plant sale, featuring flats of fall colors and other plants, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Gaslamp Restaurant, located at Pacific Coast Highway and Loynes Drive. Nominations are being accepted for the Honda Helpful Awards, and the person selected will receive a new Honda, courtesy of the Southern California Honda Dealers Association and the Helpful Honda Guys and Girls in Blue. Nominees should be an inspiring friend, family member, neighbor or coworker whose life, and the lives of others would be considerably improved by a new Honda. The Condit Spirit Award Dinner and Auction, benefiting the Community Hospital of Long Beach Foundation, begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. The event is named after former Long Beach Mayor Fillmore Condit, whose 1924 gift helped make the CHLB a reality. This year’s banquet honors the Bixby Land Company and Long Beach Firefighters Association, Local 372. The evening includes live and silent auctions, dinner and dancing. Tickets are $175. HOPE (Home Ownership for Personal Empowerment) is hosting a scramble-format golf tournament starting at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 17, at the Old Ranch Country Club. “Asian Fantasy” is the theme for a fundraiser being presented by the Dramatic Allied Arts Guild beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at The Grand 4101 E. Willow St. The event begins with a shopping boutique followed by a luncheon and fashion show starting at noon. The top of the Union Bank Building at 400 Oceangate in downtown Long Beach is the setting for a fundraiser for Long Beach BLAST at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19. The event, Wine Blast 2008, includes a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Long Beach BLAST is a nonprofit that provides after school learning for at-risk children. Tickets are $50. From now to the end of November, the Southern California Daily Grill restaurants, including the one here in Long Beach, will offer a turkey dinner special for $21.95 with a portion of the proceeds going to the Union Rescue Mission. It’s a traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey, choice of butternut squash soup or salad, stuffing and more. The top floor of the Arco Center is the setting for Children Today’s Holiday Cheer wine tasting and silent auction beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4. The “Holiday Home Tour,” featuring four El Dorado Park Estates homes, is set for 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. The Grace Community Church of Seal Beach “Support Our Troops” program is getting together adoption packages to send to our troops for the holidays. The deadline for shipments for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving items has passed and Christmas and New Year’s items should be dropped off not later than Nov. 19. Anything arriving after that will be shipped in January. The most requested item is phone cards, but they are also looking for notes of encouragement, pocket-size snacks, gum, raisin packs, travel-size toiletries and more, as well as financial donations to help with shipping. The One Day Christmas Store is getting an early start on its fundraising. For the second year, the store (a collaborative between Better Balance for Long Beach, the Long Beach Rescue Mission and First Congregational Church) will buy Christmas toys and gifts and allow financially struggling families to shop for free.
