A young local singer will enter the limelight this holiday season during a special holiday television program.
Singer Catherine Fowler has joined her three younger sisters in voicing a collection of classic Christmas songs that will air on both Dec. 25 and 26. The appearance, she said, will help launch her dream career of becoming a renowned performer.
“My sisters and I will sing five different Christmas songs,” said Fowler, a student at Long Beach City College. “The program breaks when I start talking about the meaning of the songs. We’re excited for it to premiere.”
The “Fowler Sisters Christmas Gift,” a 30-minute television special, will be broadcast on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). The quartet includes Fowler and her three sisters — Mary Colleen, 14, Anna Therese, 13, and Briege Clare, 10.
“We came from a close-knit family,” she said. “Our parents were very encouraging for our talents.”
Having performed together as a group since 2003, the Kansas-based siblings have made appearances on local television programs and at events throughout the country. Their upcoming performance, Fowler said, will reach a network spanning more than 50 million homes.
“We’ve been singing our whole lives,” she said. “We sing at every opportunity we can… Our love for singing has allowed us to pursue this, and we just get along really well, which is a huge blessing.”
Producing such a show was an experience she said she wouldn’t soon forget.
“It was probably one of the most fun times I’ve had in my life,” she said. “Before it happens, you get nervous about how it will turn out. It was a 15-hour day, and it was so much fun. It was a great sign for me that this is something I can connect with.”
Fowler’s roots as a vocalist go back to her childhood, but took off in 2006 after she and her sisters visited a recording studio to compile an album for their father, she said. What began as a family gift grew into their debut album, “Christmas Gift,” which she said has sold thousands of copies.
“We went in to record Christmas songs as a gift for the family, and then it went so well that our dad told us we should make a whole CD,” she said.
Fowler explained that fans started suggesting they create another album with traditional classics. The group responded by releasing “Believe,” which covers titles from musicals, Disney animated films, decades-old movies and more.
Proceeds from the sales of their first — and part of their second — album went toward a youth camp they had wanted to support, she said.
“Children who might not normally have went to a session could go,” she said.
Today, Fowler said she’s looking to advance her studies in film by transferring from LBCC to California State University, Long Beach. Meanwhile, she said she would seek opportunities to pursue her passion for performance.
“I’ve been trying to pursue singing out here, too,” she said. “I’m praying for an opening.”
The “Fowler Sisters Christmas Gift” will air at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 25, and at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26 (channel 261 for Satellite Dish Los Angeles, channel 57 for Charter Cable and channel 370 for Direct TV Los Angeles). In addition, the program will show online at www.ewtn.org. To find out more about the Fowler Sisters, call (877) 589-3444 or visit www.thefowlersisters.com.
