F It’s been a long time since the student section at a Long Beach State men’s basketball game was so large and so rockin’.

It wasn’t rockin’ for the first 29 minutes of Sunday’s game between Long Beach and Weber State, as the 49ers fell behind early and were down by 23 at one point and 21 points when the run started.

That was a 26-1 run fueled by aggressive man-to-man defense, timely steals, hard work for rebounds and great three-point shooting. Long Beach made an improbable comeback and the Pyramid was loud and energetic, the kind of place you always knew it could be when the program got going again.

Things fell silent when Webber State’s Kellen McCoy hit an unlikely 30-foot fade-away three-pointer to send the game into overtime. But the energy and shooting that started the 49er comeback carried over, and after 49er Donovan Morris made two key freethows with 13.9 seconds remaining, Long Beach got the win. Morris led the way with 20 points while Stephan Gilling added 15, all on three pointers.

On Tuesday night, the winning overtime ways continued as the 49ers went to Idaho and took the game to double-overtime before winning, 88-82. That win evened the 49ers’ record at 2-2.

They return home for game Sunday night (Nov. 30) against New Mexico State. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. The following Wednesday (Dec. 3), Pepperdine will visit the Pyramid. That game starts at 7 p.m. Don’t worry about getting your money’s worth with this team — they paly to the end.

F After a relatively easy Moore League season, Poly got a real test in the first round of the CIF football playoffs.

Poly was down 10-0 at halftime last Friday night against Bishop Amat at Veterans Stadium. Poly, a team with the best running game in the Southland, went to the pass in the first two quarters, but in the third returned to their strengths and pounded out a 21-17 victory. Melvin Richardson scored the winning touchdown with 1:23 left in the game.

Next up for Poly is Esperanza this Friday night on the road.

One other Moore League team remains in play — Lakewood, which defeated Servite 35-34 in overtime. This Friday, the Lancers host Mission Viejo.

Jordan High fell to traditional power Mater Dei, 35-15 in the first round.

F Long Beach State’s women’s volleyball team swept past Cal State Fullerton last week and in the process clinched the Big West championship.

The 49ers are 24-5 on the season and are looking forward to the post-season and the NCAA Tournament. But first there is one piece of unfinished business — a home date with Colorado State this Saturday (Nov. 29).

The game is at the Pyramid and the first serve is at 7 p.m.

F Next week, the high school basketball season gets underway, starting with a series of tournaments.

On the boys’ side, Wilson, Poly and Millikan are all playing in the Cerritos-Gahr tournament, which starts on Monday (Dec. 1). Poly opens with a tough test against Artesia, Millikan plays Cerritos and Wilson will face Bell.
