The city of Long Beach, the Long Beach Unified School District and other local agencies are teaming up to make it easier for parents to send their children back to school.

Roughly 50 community resource agencies will participate in the first-ever Family Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Poly High School downtown. The aim of the event, themed “Having children grow up healthy, safe and educated,” is to inform parents of ways they can help get their children back to school, especially those starting kindergarten.

“It’s a free Family Resource Fair for parents and families and the community to help explain to them what community resources are available, all of them related to getting kids back to school,” said Nancy Manriquez-Dowell, who works in the LBUSD parent education department.

Some of the agencies scheduled to attend include the city’s Department of Health and Human Services (immunization, lead prevention and other departments); Long Beach Public Library; Long Beach City College; Long Beach Head Start; Los Angeles Universal Pre-school; The Children’s Clinic; and the Children’s Home Society of California.

The event is free and will feature music and a DJ, arts and crafts, food sales by Poly students and other activities for youth such as an obstacle course and face painting. Chris Steinhauser (LBUSD superintendent), Ron Arias (DHHS director) and Anthony Batts (police department chief) also have been invited to attend.

The Family Resource Fair will double as a kick-off for the Kindergarten Festivals that take place every spring, including once a month this coming January through March.

During the festivals, parents get the chance to visit with kindergarten teachers, attend workshops on pre-math and pre-literacy skills and learn about the latest state standards for kindergarten registration, among other things.

The LBUSD also will host an Education Celebration Fair in January, at which schools set up tables with information on their programs, Manriquez-Dowell explained.

Event organizers still need donations of raffle items and door prizes for the Family Resource Fair.

To make a donation, contact Manriquez-Dowell at 429-6020 ext. 294 or via e-mail at NMDowell@lbschools.net by Friday (Nov. 7).

Poly High School is located at 1600 Atlantic Ave., near Pacific Coast Highway.
